Requirements for Obtaining French Citizenship

Learn about the important requirements for obtaining French citizenship, including residence, income, and integration.

Any foreigner can buy property in France. For this, neither a French residence permit nor a long-term visa is required. One can even not live in France and still be an owner.
Having one’s own property can be a basis for obtaining a long-term Visiteur visa if one plans to spend more than three months a year in France. However, no visa is guaranteed — one must meet other conditions as well.
Ownership in France is not a basis for obtaining French citizenship. For this, legal residence in France is important, usually for at least five years, along with professional and personal life, income, and tax declarations. Property can add a small plus to the application, showing that the applicant has already put down roots in France.
It is important to confirm integration into France: knowledge of the French language at least at the B2 level, knowledge of the history and culture of France, its structure, and principles of the Republic. Starting in 2026, this knowledge must be confirmed by passing the civic integration exam.
