Requirements for Integration for French Citizenship by Marriage

Find out if you need to take the integration exam when obtaining French citizenship through marriage. Information on requirements and changes from 2026.

When applying for French citizenship through marriage to a French citizen, taking the integration exam is not required. This is the procedure for acquiring citizenship through déclaration de nationalité française à raison du mariage, regulated by Article 21-2 of the French Civil Code.
As of January 1, 2026, the requirement for the level of French language for this procedure has changed: it is now necessary to confirm a B2 level. However, the requirement to take the integration exam does not apply in this case.
If the applicant is applying for citizenship on other grounds, such as a long-term residence permit or resident card, the integration exam is mandatory. The exam consists of 40 questions, and to pass successfully, one must answer at least 32 correctly.
To check your level of preparation, you can use a test of 40 questions in exam format on the website civic-prep.org.
