French Citizenship After Two Years of Study

Learn how two years of higher education in France can reduce the residency requirement for naturalization from five to two years.
The possibility of obtaining French citizenship after two years of higher education is provided for by Article 21-18 of the French Civil Code. The standard residency period for naturalization is five years, but it is reduced to two years for foreigners who have successfully completed two years of study with the aim of obtaining a French diploma.
After completing studies, one can submit documents for naturalization. However, submitting documents does not guarantee obtaining citizenship. The administration assesses professional integration, stability and sufficiency of income, financial independence, and the applicant’s stability in France.
The student status implies that studying remains the main activity, while employment is limited to 964 hours per year. In March 2026, the French Ministry of the Interior clarified that in the absence of sufficient resources, an ajournement of two years is usually applied, which postpones naturalization.
Case law also shows that even with a diploma and a permanent contract, insufficient financial independence can be a reason for postponement. For example, in May 2026, the Nantes Administrative Court of Appeal confirmed the decision to postpone naturalization for two years.
