Total Solar Eclipse in France: What You Need to Know

Total solar eclipse in France on August 12, 2026: important information for safe viewing.

Today, August 12, 2026, France will witness a rare astronomical event — a total solar eclipse. This event will occur for the first time since 1999, and the next one is expected only in 2081.
In France, the eclipse will begin in the evening, around 19:15–19:25, with the maximum occurring at 20:15–20:25, depending on the region. The Moon will cover between 90 to 99% of the solar disk. For the best viewing, choose a location with an open view to the west, as the Sun will be low on the horizon.
It is important to use special protective glasses marked ISO 12312-2 for viewing the eclipse. Regular sunglasses are not suitable. Directly looking at the Sun without protection can damage the light-sensitive cells of the retina, potentially leading to vision impairment.
It is especially important to explain this to children and ensure that they observe the eclipse only with protective glasses. The consequences of retinal damage may manifest several hours later and can include vision deterioration or the appearance of a dark spot in front of the eyes.
